An Attitude of Giving

Goals 2006 Monthly eTips
Issue 11, November

Over the past year thru natural disasters we have all had the opportunity to give to others in ways that we didn’t anticipate. We are also about to embark on the season of giving. Let’s think outside the box this month, and do your work as a vehicle for giving.

Barbara Pratt reminded me that when you do your work with an attitude of giving, it takes the focus off of you and how well or how poorly you may be doing, and puts the focus on the other person (customer, partner, family, friends). When you change the focus and put someone else first, you automatically delegate any personal fears and barriers to the backseat and are able to forge ahead.

All work can be viewed as giving some service to somebody. Think about your work, and who benefits directly by what you do and the way you do it. Some examples:

  • Parents - serve their children with examples of love, caring, responsibility, sharing and with provisions like helping with homework.

  • Children - serve their parents; serve their siblings with obedience to family rules, with cheerful chores, with respect for others.

  • Salespeople - serve their customers with excellent products & services, serve your prospects with awareness of your products and services so they have the opportunity to buy & get value from them.

  • Accountants / Lawyers / Consultants - you serve your customers by helping them get back in control of their finances / legal situation / business situation; you provide peace of mind.

  • Managers / Company Leaders - you create an environment that fosters excellence with opportunities for creativity, expansion, teamwork, brilliance, productivity, laughter. You serve your staff in this way. You serve your bosses with the results.

  • Employees - you serve yourself and your families through your best work which both creates your current paycheck & grows your skills to create bigger future paychecks in the market; you serve your bosses with cheerful, excellent work; you serve your company's customers directly or indirectly with the quality of the resulting products & services

Join me this month with the attitude of work being a vehicle for giving and see if it makes a difference. After all … attitude is everything!

You are what you believe.  BELIEVE IN YOURSELF!
